Afshin Ismaeli (1985) is a highly acclaimed Norwegian war photographer who has dedicated his life to bringing attention to the realities of war. Having grown up in a war-torn country himself, he has a deep understanding of the devastating impact that conflict can have on individuals and communities. After completing his studies in

journalism at the University of Oslo, Afshin began a career as a photojournalist, focusing on war situations, conflicts, and humanitarian issues. 

His work has been recognized with numerous awards in both journalism and photojournalism, and his images have been featured in publications around the world. In 2019, he received the Ossietzky Award for freedom of expression, a prestigious honor recognizing his dedication to reporting on difficult and sensitive topics.

Ismaeli's work has taken him to some of the most dangerous places in the world, including Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. In Iraq and Syria, he covered the conflicts and the war against the Islamic State. His extensive photographic essays from these regions offer a unique perspective on the human toll of war and the plight of those caught in the middle.

In 2021, Ismaeli was on the ground in Afghanistan to cover the fall of Kabul. His powerful images captured  the chaos and desperation of the moment and earned him the Picture of the Year award.

Today, Ismaeli is an employed journalist and photographer for Aftenposten, one of Norway's largest newspapers. His fearless dedication to uncovering the truth and shining a light on important issues has made him one of the most respected journalists of his generation.
