Water Scarcity and Crisis in Iraq
The drought affecting Nasiriyah in southern Iraq and neighboring regions in Iran has had severe social, economic, and environmental impacts. Both areas, heavily dependent on agriculture and marshlands, are experiencing historically low water levels due to climate change, upstream dam projects, and inefficient water management practices. In Nasiriyah, the drought has worsened conditions in the already fragile marshlands, a UNESCO World Heritage site, causing rivers and marshes to dry up, leading to a decline in agriculture, fishing, and traditional livelihoods.
