The Al-Sina’a prison, also known as Hasakah prison, is a high-security facility in Syria’s northeastern Hasakah province, operated by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The prison holds thousands of ISIS detainees, including former fighters and affiliates captured during the territorial defeat of ISIS. It is one of the largest facilities in the region specifically for holding individuals with ISIS affiliations and has become central to regional and international security discussions.
Conditions in the prison are challenging, with overcrowding and limited resources, which heighten the risk of violence and unrest. In January 2022, Al-Sina’a prison was the site of a major ISIS-led attack intended to free detainees, sparking days of violent clashes between ISIS fighters and the SDF, with support from coalition forces. This incident underscored the ongoing security risks in holding large numbers of high-profile prisoners in a conflict zone, as ISIS remnants still attempt to reorganize.
